Step-by-Step Guide: Clearing CMOS Using the Clear CMOS Button on the Motherboard I/O

Clearing the CMOS resets your motherboard’s BIOS settings to their factory defaults, which can help resolve multiple issues, incorrect BIOS settings, or overclocking failures.

⚠️ Important Notes Before Proceeding:

  • This process will reset all BIOS settings to default. If you have custom settings, note them down.
  • Ensure the PC is completely powered off and unplugged before proceeding.

Steps to Clear CMOS Using the Clear CMOS Button:

1. Turn Off and Unplug Your PC

  • Shut down your computer properly.
  • Switch off the power supply (if it has a switch).
  • Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet.

2. Locate the Clear CMOS Button

  • Find the Clear CMOS button on the rear I/O panel of your motherboard (near the USB ports).
  • It is usually labeled as “CLR CMOS”, “CMOS”, or has a small icon representing a reset.

3. Press and Hold the Clear CMOS Button

  • Press and hold the Clear CMOS button for 5-10 seconds using your finger or a non-metallic object.
  • This will discharge stored power and reset the BIOS.

4. Reconnect Power and Turn On Your PC

  • Plug the power cable back into the PC.
  • Turn on the power supply switch (if applicable).
  • Press the power button to boot your system.

5. Enter BIOS to Confirm Reset

  • On startup, enter the BIOS by pressing DEL or F2 (varies by motherboard manufacturer).
  • Check if the BIOS settings have been reset to default.

6. Reconfigure BIOS Settings (If Needed)

  • If you had custom settings (e.g., XMP, fan curves, boot order), you’ll need to reconfigure them.
